Paperblanks 2012 Japanses Lacquer Boxes Diaries

The cover designs of these 2012 diaries reproduce artwork taken from Japanese lacquer boxes of the 19th Century Edo and Meiii period.

The designs were built up in layers made from tree sap and carefully placed gold, silver, gold and copper powders. This painstaking process is known as Maki-e a process which has evolved over centuries of craft tradition in Japan.

The designs here are taken from boxes in a private collection in Kyoto and reproduced to spectacular effect by Paperblanks.
